KALANGA BIBLE TRANSLATION PROJECT

In a significant milestone, the New Testament Kalanga Bible has been warmly embraced by communities in Botswana. The translation, undertaken by the Bible Society of Botswana, addresses the linguistic and cultural challenges posed by the Hebrew source text. With its successful reception, efforts are now focused on translating the Old Testament. This achievement marks a vital step in preserving the Kalanga language and spirituality in the Northern part of the country, as the Bible becomes a cornerstone in churches and funeral services..

The year 2009 marked a moment of joy to the Kalanga people as they witnessed the launch of the New Testament (NT) and Psalms (Ndebo Mbuya ne Njimbo), yet another milestone marked by the Bible Society of Botswana to ensure that the word of God is available to all people in languages that speaks to their hearts. Originally, the NT and Psalms book started in the 1990’s.

The first Full Kalanga Bible was launched in 2018. The 2018 launch itself was a magnificent event because of the support from communities, individuals, donors locally and internationally. The launch of Kalanga full Bible made history in the Christian era as it marked the first full Bible in one of our native language, a great opportunity for breaking language barriers existing in the country, hence restoring dignity and balance of ethnicity. The existence of Kalanga Bible in different homes encourages learning of the language the younger generation, hence its perseveration and cultural heritage.
